Red Bull Culture Clash landed in Orlando Stadium, Johannesburg on the 23rd September 2017. Four of the continents biggest artists and their crews took to the stage for four rounds of high-intensity musical competition, with the winner decided by the sound level of the crowd response. Joynes Nash Ltd were brought over from the UK for the event and relied on the NTi Audio XL2 Sound Level Meter to gather the necessary data.

Actor and Television presenter Thapelo Mokoena and fellow presenter Siyabonga Ngwekazi were hosting the show with running commentary. Music at its best was served up by the four different artists presenting different music genres like Hip Hop, House, Dancehall, and Afrobeat. The line-up included top artists such as AKA and Top Boyz Sound System, Patroanking and Red Hot Sound System, DJ Tira and Durban Massacre Sound System and Admiral and Jahseed with African Storm Sound System. The event was featured with various special guest performers.

Multi Live Visualiziation of Sound Data
With the event being broadcast live on South African television, there was a need for the show to ensure clear visualization of the live sound data. Both within the arena for the benefit of the audience, as well as on the live television broadcast. That, plus four individual performance arenas within a single stage measuring some 80m wide, the constantly changing crowd dynamics, and the live and unpredictable performances of artists and hosts presented a range of challenges.

The technical solution involved three XL2 Sound Level Meters running from the front of house position, with the microphones positioned to capture the crowd’s response to the artists. The first XL2 utilized the NTi Audio Projector Pro Software to provide real-time live data to the TV production director. It also provided a similar feed to the visual graphic engineers within the stadium, along with a real-time audio feed from the headphone output to drive visual sound bars on the stage LCD screens.

The second XL2 ran a Microsoft Excel application which presented customizable instantaneous sound level data in real time to the consultants. This allowed for the analysis of the crowd noise data to be undertaken extremely rapidly, providing almost instantaneous results. The third meter logged all parameters for the full duration of the event, this ensured a thorough log of the full event that was captured for future analysis.

Tight battle for the win
The crowd went wild after DJ Tira brought out Mgarimbe to perform the hit song “Sister Bettina” on stage. Kwaito legend Zola brought out by Durban Massacre was followed by Mdu Masilela and Riky Rick. The Top Boys followed with legendary HHP and Red Hot with renowned artists Yemi Alade, Nasty C, Davido and Busiswa featuring in their performance. Unfortunately, the popular support of the audience did not prevent HHP and Red Hot being disqualified after performing the same song as African Storm. The ultimate winner of the evening was Durban Massacre after going head-to-head with the all the other artists and coming out on top. Big up Durban Massacre!
