Starting with firmware version V1.56, users can now conveniently perform noise curves measurements in real time and according to various international standards with the XL3 Acoustic Analyzer. A dedicated measurement function is available directly in the XL3 main menu.

Noise curves are standardized rating curves used to assess background noise in indoor environments. In room acoustics, they are used to evaluate the acoustic quality of a room based on its frequency spectrum. Noise curves are mainly applied in the planning of ventilation and air-conditioning systems as well as in the evaluation of offices, meeting rooms, and studios. The measured value is determined by comparing measured octave-band levels with the defined curves. Low values indicate a quiet and acoustically-comfortable environment. The XL3 highlights problem frequencies, identifies the relevant limiting curve, and provides immediate results. The Noise Curves measurement function includes three views.

The first screen displays either live or aggregated level values in octave or one-third octave resolution compared against the limit values of the individual noise curves. The relevant curve is highlighted in red. This immediate visual feedback allows consultants to rapidly identify if a room meets the acoustic standards, while they are in the room. The standardized noise curve value, in this example Noise Criteria (NC), as well as the limiting frequency band are also displayed numerically.
The second screen shows additional available parameters of the selected standard, in this example the Speech Interference Level (SIL) as well as information about measurement continuity.
In the Noise Curves measurement settings, the desired evaluation method can be selected from numerous noise curves standards.
All measurement data can be conveniently accessed directly on the XL3 in a clearly structured measurement report.

The Noise Curves measurement function requires the Extended Room Acoustics option installed on the XL3.
